Learning from Father's Day

If you're a dad then perhaps you should leave this up on your screen because Father's Day is on the 15th of June and provides the rest of the family with a wonderful opportunity to show the man of the house how grateful they all are for everything he does.

Created ‘back' in the 20th century in response to Mother's Day, the whole world now celebrates Father's Day and it's the perfect opportunity to put to use all those educational and creative ideas...

Top gift ideas for Dad

To all the mums: don't forget that nothing says ‘Happy Father's Day' better than something that the kids have made themselves. Here are a few educational ways your children can add a really personal touch to Dad's big day:

  • Father's Day: The Greatest Hits - why don't the kids get on the computer and burn him a CD with all his favourite songs on? It'll be a lesson in ICT and music for them and a chance for him to remind them that ‘they don't make them like this anymore'
  • A trip down memory lane - A great opportunity to practise the art of genealogy. Rummage through the old photos and create a collage of his life from start to finish, including the embarrassing baby pics and any shots of him with a classic 80's haircut
  • Take to the stage - for the young thespians in your family, what better way to celebrate Father's Day than performing a play for him? They can make their own costumes, write a script and even turn the living room into a theatre
  • Father's Day: The Movie - if the kids are more into Spielberg than Spacey, then perhaps they would prefer to pick up a camera and create a video message for Dad, or even put together a short movie in honour of the big man
  • Put it in a poem - harness the children's ability to wax lyrical for hours on end by helping them to compose a poem for their father. A great writing exercise and a wonderful way to show him what they think
  • Draw your dad - take a photo of him, preferably not the one with the classic 80's haircut, and encourage your child to unleash their artistic abilities on a hand drawn portrait which he can frame and cherish forever.
