A survey has found that Jack Black’s failed rock musician turned prep school teacher Dewey Finn is the nation’s number one teaching hero. Postal DVD and games rental company LOVEFiLM conducted a poll on over 2,000 of their members about who they would choose as their best teacher of all time.

Jack Black’s thwarted would-be rocker beat off tough competition from Robin Williams in Dead Poets’ Society (the most popular teacher amongst other teachers) and magical headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon). There was only one woman on the list, Michelle Pfeiffer  as LouAnne Johnson in Dangerous Minds, and she only limped in at number 10.

The fantasy teachers top ten:
1) Dewey Finn (Jack Black), The School of Rock (16 percent)
2) John Keating (Robin Williams), The Dead Poets Society (15 percent)
3) Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), Raiders of the Lost Ark (11 percent)
4) Mark Thackeray (Sidney Poitier), To Sir, With Love (9 percent)
5) Mr Chips (Robert Donat), Goodbye Mr Chips (8 percent)
6) Ed Rooney (Jeffrey Jones), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (6 percent)
7) Albus Dumbledore (MIchael Gambon), Harry Potter, 5 percent
8) Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) X Men, 3 percent
9) Ken Carter (Samuel L Jackson), Coach Carter, 2 percent
10) LouAnne Johnson (Michelle Pfeiffer), Dangerous Minds, 1 percent
