Poppy’s story – “My Child Can’t Read!”

What happened to us:
At the time we went through this we could not find any answers that made sense to us. When Poppy started school I was nervous, as every mum is, but overall, I was excited for her. Couldn’t wait to see her thrive in the classroom.
A year in to the national curriculum and I was feeling total despair! Poppy had fallen way behind her classmates with her reading, writing and spelling and we felt helpless. What had gone wrong?
From birth, Poppy loved to be read to, had an unusually large vocabulary for her age, very imaginative, she was artistically creative and while being shy, she did have close friends from nursery.
To us, Poppy did not appear to be dyslexic or autistic or have any special educational need. But, those were the possibilities presented to us by many people at her school and beyond.
The reality was, as I always knew, Poppy did not have a special educational need, despite the fact that she could not pass a simple 5 word spelling test, write or read.
